Avalokiteshvara-bodhisattva hanging scroll

A kakejiku that invokes compassion

Avalokiteshvara bodhisattva hanging scroll

Avalokiteshvara-bodhisattva
is depicted in five vigorous
characters.

I want to invoke the
compassionate activity of
the maha-bodhisatttva
Avalokiteshvara, the Great
Bodhisattva and the
loving-kindness of all the
Masters whose enlightened
activity helps all sentient
beings. A calligraphy of
a Buddha or Bodhisattva in
Buddhist art is considered
to be the vivid expression
of the depicted Holy Being
and is therefore a true
object of veneration.

Calligraphy mounted on cream-yellow
silk with fine pattern and natural
wooden roller at the bottom

Semi-cursive script

Calligraphy size: 21" x 49"; 55 x 125 cm
Mounting size: 33" x 96"; 84 x 244 cm

I have written this kakejiku of Avalokiteshvara-bodhisattva in large characters, so that the hanging scroll gives you the presence of the enlightened activity that springs forth from this Holy Name. Every time you look at the calligraphy it recalls the all-encompassing loving-kindness of Avalokiteshvara, the maha-bodhisattva, who promised to free al sentient beings from suffering.

Avalokiteshvara bodhisattva in Japanese calligraphy

In Japanese it says:

KAN JI ZAI BO SA

English rendering:

Avalokiteshvara-bodhisattva

The five characters
KAN JI ZAI BO SA,
are all the more interesting
because they are the first
five characters of the
Shingyo, the Heart Sutra,
the essence of the Buddha's
teaching on emptiness.

This kakejiku invites you to
sit down and to be aware of
this Immeasurable Ocean of
Virtue.
