The paramita of wisdom

Prajnaparamita on a Japanese
hanging scroll

Paramita of wisdom hanging scroll

The paramita of wisdom
-hannyaharamita- in Japanese,
is the focus of this kakejiku. This
hanging scroll brings homage
to prajnaparamita, the transcendent
wisdom, the truth that Buddha
Shakyamuni describes as:

"The profound Dharma difficult to
see or awaken to, peaceful, excellent,
and beyond the realm of intellect,
subtle and to be realized by the wise".

Calligraphy mounted on deep-blue silk
with a fine swirl pattern, white border
and natural wooden roller at the bottom.

Cursive script

Calligraphy size: 14" x 53"; 35 x 134 cm

Mounting size: 21" x 87"; 53 x 221 cm;

Prajnaparamita is called the Mother of all Buddhas. I wanted to emphasize this female aspect and chose therefore a fine and fluent calligraphic style -the cursive script of Wang Xizhi. Wang Xizhi (Wang Hsi-chih) is the calligraphy-saint of 4th century China. His beautiful, elegant cursive script became the eternal classic model for all the following generations. History records that he was extremely fond of swans and some say that his cursive style was even inspired by the graceful movement of this bird.

The Japanese text says
HANNYAHARAMITTA
in six kanji:

HAN, NYA, HA, RA, MIT, TA
