In traditional Chinese and Japanese painting the bamboo, the plum blossom, the orchid and the chrysanthemum are known as the Four Gentlemen or Noble Ones. Each of them stands for a specific human moral virtue. As for the bamboo, it is admired for its capacity to bend and not to break when confronted with adversity, it inspires purity, humility and integrity.
With the following words of one of the great Chinese poets and calligraphers of the Song Dynasty, the poet Su Tung-p’o, alias Su Shih, I would like to sing my love for the bamboo.
Rather eat without meat than live without bamboo.
Man without meat will be thin, but without bamboo they will be vulgar.
A print of this bamboo painting is available at my prints gallery.
