My grapevine paintings show grapevines brushed in a pictorial language of sumi and Japanese watercolors on rice paper. This particular grapevine painting is a monochrome ink painting.
This grapevine painting is mounted on a soft yellow silken scroll. The scroll has a natural wooden roller at the bottom.
Size of the entire hanging scroll:
81 x 32 in; 206 x 81,5 cm.

For those of you who have seen some of my other grapevine paintings, you already know that the Priorat, a unique wine country in Catalonia has inspired most of my wine paintings.
In the Grapevine of Life, I wanted to recreate the awareness of a pristine beauty present in those vineyards, a harmonious coexistence of nature and man, seldom found on cultivated land. The Grapevine Of life, standing against a licorella (slate) rock, is like a natural grapevine Zen garden.
And this is where the poem of the Chinese Tang Poet Han Shan, alias Cold Mountain, comes in. I brushed a viny calligraphy of the first four lines of this poem as companion of the grapevine.
I enjoy the simple path
between dark vines and mountain caves
the wilderness has room to roam
with white clouds for companions
there’s a road but not to town
only mindless men can climb
at night I sit on the rocks alone
until the moon comes up Cold Mountain
translation by Red Pine, from his book The Collected songs of Cold Mountain
A print of the this wine painting The Grapevine Of Life is available at my prints gallery.
