This Zen poetry calligraphy shows the phrase Who will share a glass of wine from a poem by Han Shan, the Chinese hermit poet called Cold Mountain. I have brushed the five characters as if they where old twisted grape vines, divine carriers of wine, as an invitation to share a good glass of wine with a beloved friend and invite the Muse.
Han Shan has been translated by some of the most gifted English translators. I’d like to mention Red Pine and Barton Watson and quote their translation of the opening lines of this poem:
[This month when farmers escape the heat, ]
Who will share a dipper of wine
(translation by Red Pine, from his book The Collected songs of Cold Mountain)
[This month, when farmers stay indoors to shun the heat,]
Who will drink with me and be merry?
(translation by Barton Watson, from his book 100 Poems By The T’ang Poet Han-shan)
This Zen Poetry Calligraphy is mounted on a scroll; soft green silk with fine pattern and natural wooden rollers at the bottom.

One summer I was fortunate to stay at the Catalan wine region of the Priorat, now world-famous for its deep red wines of intense taste and profound character. The Priorat is magic; small vineyards on steep slopes, terraces with vines climbing the hills, old grape vines twisting and bending, tiny grapes colored with jade green, light pink, dark wine red and mauve, llicorella (slate) soil in dark coppers and blues, and the pristine Montsant mountain range, the holy guardian of the wine farmers and vineyards. An unforgettable experience that nurtures body and mind body.
In praise of the wine farmers of the Priorat and in gratitude for the fine moments spent in company with a beloved friend and a deep red Priorat wine, I brushed this calligraphy. The grape vine spirit has definitely slipped into the brush!
The Who will share a glass of wine calligraphy shows the following Chinese characters in sosho, cursive calligraphy.
斗 a dipper, a glass
酒 sake, wine
共 with, together
誰 who
歓 joy, delight
